Can chickens eat raw rice?
If one of your chickens has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Uncooked grains are difficult for chickens to break down compared to cooked rice, which can lead to digestive discomfort or impaction. While not poisonous, feeding too much raw rice can fill them up without providing the balanced nutrition they need for laying eggs and staying healthy.
If you do feed it
- Soak the rice in water for several hours before feeding to soften it and improve digestibility
- Limit raw rice to a small handful per bird no more than once or twice a week
- Ensure the rice is mixed with their regular feed rather than served as a standalone meal
- Always provide plenty of fresh water alongside any grain treats to aid digestion
Watch out for
- moldy or old rice which can produce toxins
- large clumps of uncooked rice that might cause crop blockage
- rice mixed with salt, butter, or seasonings meant for humans
