Can chickens eat corn?

Why

Chickens can digest corn well, but it is high in carbohydrates and low in the essential protein and nutrients they need daily. Feeding too much corn can lead to obesity and nutritional deficiencies if it crowds out their regular diet.

If you do feed it

• Limit treats to no more than 10% of their total daily food intake
• Serve raw or cooked kernels without added salt, butter, or seasonings
• Ensure corn is fresh and free from mold to prevent illness
• Offer corn as a treat rather than a primary meal

Watch out for

• Moldy corn which can cause fatal respiratory issues
• Sweetened or canned corn with added sugars and salts
• Whole ears that may pose a choking hazard or cause crop impaction
• Popcorn kernels which are hard to digest
