Can chickens eat cranberry?

Why

Cranberries are non-toxic and offer antioxidants, but their high acidity and tartness can upset a chicken's stomach if fed in large quantities. They should only be offered as an occasional treat and not as a staple of their diet.

If you do feed it

• Offer only fresh or frozen cranberries without any added sugar or sweeteners.
• Limit treats to no more than 10% of the chicken's total daily food intake.
• Chop or mash the berries to prevent choking, especially for smaller birds.
• Introduce them slowly to ensure the chickens tolerate the acidity well.

Watch out for

• Cranberry sauce or jellies containing sugar, xylitol, or spices
• Dried cranberries which are often sweetened and very sticky
• Moldy or spoiled berries
