Can chickens eat strawberries?
If one of your chickens has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Strawberries are non-toxic and offer vitamins, but their high sugar content can upset a chicken's digestive system if overfed. They should always be treated as an occasional snack rather than a staple of their diet.
If you do feed it
- Wash the berries thoroughly to remove pesticides and dirt.
- Cut large berries into smaller pieces to prevent choking.
- Limit treats to no more than 10% of their total daily food intake.
- Remove any moldy or rotten parts before feeding.
Watch out for
- Sweetened or candied strawberries
- Moldy or rotting fruit
- Large whole berries that could cause choking
