Can chickens eat cauliflower?
If one of your chickens has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Cauliflower is non-toxic and provides vitamins and fiber, but it is mostly water and can cause digestive upset if fed in large quantities. It is best offered in small, chopped pieces to prevent choking and ensure the birds eat a balanced diet.
If you do feed it
- Chop the cauliflower into small, bite-sized pieces to prevent choking hazards
- Limit treats to no more than 10% of their daily diet to ensure they eat their complete feed
- Introduce the vegetable slowly to monitor for any digestive sensitivity
- Avoid feeding wilted or moldy cauliflower which can cause illness
Watch out for
- Whole florets that are too large for the birds to swallow safely
- Cauliflower cooked with salt, butter, garlic, or onions which are toxic
- Moldy or spoiled vegetables that can cause respiratory or digestive issues
