Can chickens eat carrots?

Why

Carrots are non-toxic and provide beneficial vitamins and fiber for chickens, making them a good occasional snack. However, they should not replace their balanced layer feed, as too many treats can lead to nutritional imbalances or obesity.

If you do feed it

• Chop or grate carrots into small pieces to prevent choking and make them easier to eat.
• Limit treats to no more than 10% of their total daily diet to ensure they eat their complete feed.
• Offer raw or lightly steamed carrots without any added salt, butter, or seasonings.
• Mix chopped carrots with other vegetables to encourage foraging behavior.

Watch out for

• Whole large chunks that could cause choking
• Carrot tops which are generally safe but less palatable
• Processed carrot snacks with added sugars or salts
