Can chickens eat carrots?
If one of your chickens has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Carrots are non-toxic and provide vitamins, yet their hard texture can pose a choking risk if fed whole. They also have a high sugar content compared to greens, so they should not replace a balanced diet of layer feed.
If you do feed it
- Chop carrots into small, bite-sized pieces or grate them to prevent choking.
- Limit treats to no more than 10% of the chicken's total daily food intake.
- Offer raw or cooked carrots without any added salt, butter, or seasonings.
- Ensure fresh water is always available when feeding sugary treats.
Watch out for
- Whole baby carrots that are too large to swallow safely
- Carrot tops which are generally safe but less nutritious
- Sweetened or processed carrot snacks meant for humans
