Can chickens eat cabbage?
If one of your chickens has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Cabbage is non-toxic and provides vitamins, but feeding too much can cause digestive upset or interfere with thyroid function. It is best offered as an occasional snack rather than a daily staple.
If you do feed it
- Chop the cabbage into small, bite-sized pieces to prevent choking and make it easier to eat.
- Limit treats to no more than 10% of their total daily food intake.
- Introduce cabbage slowly to monitor for any signs of gas or bloating.
- Avoid feeding wilted or moldy cabbage to prevent illness.
Watch out for
- Large, tough stems that can be hard to chew
- Moldy or rotting leaves
- Cabbage treated with pesticides or heavy fertilizers
