Can chickens eat spinach?
If one of your chickens has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Spinach contains oxalates which can bind to calcium and lead to deficiencies if fed in large quantities. It is also high in water content, so overfeeding can cause digestive upset or dilute their nutrient intake.
If you do feed it
- Limit spinach to no more than 10% of their total diet
- Feed it fresh and chopped, never wilted or cooked with salt
- Rotate with other leafy greens to ensure a balanced diet
- Avoid feeding spinach daily to prevent calcium buildup issues
Watch out for
- Spinach with added salt or seasonings
- Wilted or spoiled leaves
- Large quantities fed as a primary food source
