Can dogs eat xylitol?
If your dog has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Severely toxic to dogs. Found in sugar-free gum, sweets and some peanut butters. This artificial sweetener causes a rapid and dangerous drop in blood sugar in dogs, which can lead to seizures and liver failure. It is commonly found in sugar-free gum, candies, and some peanut butter brands, so always check labels carefully.
Watch out for
- sugar-free gum and mints
- sugar-free candies and chocolates
- xylitol-sweetened peanut butter
- baked goods labeled sugar-free
