Can dogs eat potatoes?
If your dog has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Raw potatoes contain solanine, a toxin that can make dogs sick, so they must always be fully cooked. Even cooked potatoes offer little nutritional value for dogs and can cause weight gain or digestive upset if fed too often.
If you do feed it
- Serve only fully cooked potatoes without salt, butter, garlic, onions, or oils.
- Limit treats to a few small cubes occasionally, not as a meal replacement.
- Peel the skin to reduce the risk of solanine and make them easier to digest.
- Introduce slowly to check for any stomach upset or allergic reaction.
Watch out for
- raw or green potatoes
- potato chips or fries
- mashed potatoes with butter or milk
- potato skins
- seasonings like garlic and onion powder
