Can dogs eat peas?
If your dog has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Peas are non-toxic and provide beneficial nutrients like protein and fiber, but they should only be offered as a small part of a balanced diet. Overfeeding can lead to digestive upset or contribute to weight gain if not accounted for in their daily calorie intake.
If you do feed it
- Serve only fresh, frozen, or canned peas without added salt, butter, or seasonings.
- Limit treats to no more than 10% of your dog's total daily calories.
- Mash or lightly cook the peas to make them easier to digest.
- Introduce peas slowly to monitor for any signs of gas or stomach sensitivity.
Watch out for
- Sweetened or seasoned pea dishes
- Pea pods which can be a choking hazard or cause blockages
- Canned peas with high sodium content
- Pea-based dog foods if your vet has advised a specific diet
