Can dogs eat corn?

Why

Corn is a common ingredient in many dog foods and provides carbohydrates and fiber, but it is not a complete protein source. Whole kernels can sometimes pass through the digestive system undigested, and the cob itself poses a serious choking or blockage hazard.

If you do feed it

• Serve only plain, cooked kernels without butter, salt, or seasonings.
• Limit corn to less than 10% of your dog's daily caloric intake.
• Always remove the cob before feeding to prevent intestinal blockages.
• Mash or chop kernels for smaller dogs to aid digestion.

Watch out for

• Corn cobs (high risk of blockage)
• Sweet corn on the cob
• Popcorn (butter, salt, and unpopped kernels are dangerous)
• Canned corn with added sodium or preservatives
