Can dogs eat broccoli?
If your dog has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Broccoli contains isothiocyanates which can irritate a dog's stomach and cause gas or diarrhea if they eat too much. It can also be a choking hazard if given in large, unchopped pieces.
If you do feed it
- Limit broccoli to no more than 10% of their daily calorie intake
- Always chop it into small, bite-sized pieces to prevent choking
- Start with a tiny amount to see how their stomach reacts
- Avoid giving broccoli stems which are harder to digest
Watch out for
- Large florets that pose a choking risk
- Broccoli stems that are tough and hard to chew
- Any broccoli prepared with onions, garlic, salt, or butter
- Canned or pickled broccoli which contains unsafe additives
