Can chickens eat watermelon?
If one of your chickens has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Watermelon is mostly water and sugar, so feeding too much can cause digestive upset or diarrhea. The high sugar content also means it should only be an occasional snack rather than a staple of their diet.
If you do feed it
- Remove the rind and seeds to prevent choking or digestive blockages.
- Cut the fruit into small, bite-sized pieces to make it easy for chickens to eat.
- Limit treats to no more than 10% of their daily food intake.
- Serve fresh and discard any uneaten portions quickly to avoid spoilage.
Watch out for
- seeds
- rind
- sweetened or canned versions
- moldy fruit
