Can chickens eat watermelon rind?

Why

The rind is mostly water and fiber, which helps with hydration and digestion, but the tough outer skin can be difficult for them to chew and digest if not cut up. It is also very low in protein compared to their main feed, so it should only be a treat and not a meal replacement.

If you do feed it

• Cut the rind into small, bite-sized pieces to prevent choking and make it easier to eat.
• Remove any seeds if possible, as large seeds can cause crop impaction in smaller birds.
• Offer only as an occasional treat, limiting it to no more than 10% of their daily diet.
• Ensure the rind is fresh and free from mold or rot before feeding.

Watch out for

• large whole seeds that may cause blockages
• moldy or rotting rind which can be toxic
• sweetened or processed watermelon products
• excessive feeding leading to diarrhea
