Can chickens eat uncooked rice?

Why

Hard, dry grains can be difficult for chickens to digest and may cause crop impaction if consumed in excess. Soaking or cooking the rice beforehand softens the grains and makes them much easier for the birds to process safely.

If you do feed it

• Soak uncooked rice in water for at least 30 minutes before feeding to soften the grains
• Limit uncooked rice to a small treat portion, no more than 10% of their daily diet
• Ensure fresh water is always available to help with digestion
• Avoid feeding large quantities at once to prevent crop blockage

Watch out for

• Large clumps of dry rice that may cause blockages
• Rice mixed with salt, butter, or seasonings
• Moldy or old rice which can be toxic
• Sweetened rice products
