Can chickens eat tomatoes?
If one of your chickens has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
The green stems, leaves, and unripe green tomatoes contain solanine, a toxin that can make chickens sick. Ripe red fruit flesh is generally okay, but the seeds and skins can cause digestive upset if fed in large amounts.
If you do feed it
- Only feed fully ripe, red tomatoes; discard all green stems, leaves, and unripe fruit.
- Limit treats to a few small pieces a few times a week to prevent digestive issues.
- Wash the tomatoes thoroughly to remove any pesticides or dirt before serving.
- Chop the fruit into small pieces to make it easier for them to eat.
Watch out for
- green stems and leaves
- unripe green tomatoes
- sweetened or cooked tomato products
- moldy fruit
