Can chickens eat salty food?
If one of your chickens has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Avoid. Chickens tolerate very little salt, and salty scraps cause problems fast. Chickens cannot process high levels of salt, and even small amounts of salty scraps can cause dehydration and kidney issues. The effects happen fast, so it is best to keep all salty human foods away from your flock.
Watch out for
- salty snacks like chips or pretzels
- cured meats like bacon or ham
- broth or soup bases
- salted nuts
