Can chickens eat rice?

Why

Rice provides carbohydrates for energy but lacks the complete protein, vitamins, and minerals that laying hens need daily. Feeding too much can lead to nutritional deficiencies or obesity since it is filling but not nutrient-dense.

If you do feed it

• Always serve rice fully cooked and plain without added salt, butter, or spices.
• Limit treats to no more than 10% of their total daily food intake.
• Mix the rice with their regular layer feed or scratch grains to ensure balanced nutrition.
• Ensure fresh water is always available when feeding starchy foods.

Watch out for

• Uncooked rice which can expand in the crop and cause blockages.
• Sweetened or flavored rice products containing sugar or artificial additives.
• Leftover rice that has been sitting out and may have developed mold or bacteria.
• Rice mixed with onions, garlic, or excessive salt.
