Can chickens eat raisins?
If one of your chickens has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Raisins are high in sugar and can cause digestive upset or obesity if fed too frequently. While not toxic in small quantities, the concentrated sweetness means they should only be offered sparingly to avoid health issues.
If you do feed it
- Limit treats to no more than 1-2 raisins per bird per week
- Ensure raisins are plain and unsweetened without added sulfites
- Chop larger raisins to prevent choking hazards
- Always provide fresh water alongside treats to help with digestion
Watch out for
- Sweetened or candied raisins
- Raisins with added spices or flavorings
- Moldy or spoiled dried fruit
