Can chickens eat potatoes?
If one of your chickens has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Raw potatoes and green skins contain solanine, a toxin that can make chickens very sick. Cooking them thoroughly destroys the toxin, making them a safe treat when given sparingly.
If you do feed it
- Only feed fully cooked potatoes with no salt, butter, or seasonings.
- Remove all green skins and sprouts before serving.
- Limit treats to less than 10% of their daily diet.
- Mash or chop potatoes to prevent choking.
Watch out for
- raw potatoes
- green skins
- sprouts
- fried potatoes
