Can chickens eat popcorn?
If one of your chickens has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Popcorn is mostly empty calories and can be hard for chickens to digest in large quantities. Unpopped kernels pose a choking hazard or can cause crop impaction if swallowed whole.
If you do feed it
- Serve only fully popped kernels that are plain, unsalted, and free of butter or oil
- Limit treats to a few pieces per bird, no more than once or twice a week
- Ensure all kernels are fully popped to prevent choking or crop blockage
- Avoid any popcorn with added flavors, sugar, or artificial sweeteners
Watch out for
- unpopped kernels
- butter and salt
- cheese or caramel coatings
- microwave popcorn seasoning
