Can chickens eat pineapple?

Why

Fresh pineapple is non-toxic to chickens and provides vitamins, but its high sugar content and acidity can cause digestive upset if fed too much. The tough skin and core are difficult to digest and should always be removed before serving.

If you do feed it

• Remove the tough outer skin and the hard central core before chopping into small, bite-sized pieces.
• Limit treats to no more than 10% of their daily diet to prevent digestive issues from excess sugar.
• Offer fresh pineapple only occasionally, not as a daily food source.
• Ensure the pineapple is plain and free from added sugars or syrups.

Watch out for

• Pineapple skin and core which are hard to digest
• Canned pineapple containing added sugars or syrups
• Fermented or moldy fruit which can be toxic
