Can chickens eat pear?
If one of your chickens has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Pears are non-toxic and provide hydration and vitamins, but their high sugar content means they should not replace a balanced diet. The core and seeds must be removed to prevent choking and avoid trace amounts of cyanide found in the seeds.
If you do feed it
- Remove all seeds and the hard core before feeding.
- Offer only small, chopped pieces as a treat, not a meal replacement.
- Limit treats to less than 10% of their total daily food intake.
- Ensure the pear is fresh and free from mold or rot.
Watch out for
- seeds and core (contain trace cyanide)
- sweetened or canned pears (high sugar and additives)
- moldy fruit (can cause respiratory issues)
- large chunks (choking hazard)
