Can chickens eat peanuts?
If one of your chickens has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Peanuts are high in fat and can cause obesity or fatty liver disease if fed too frequently. Additionally, raw or moldy peanuts pose a serious health risk due to toxins that can be fatal to poultry.
If you do feed it
- Feed only unsalted, raw, or dry-roasted peanuts without any added oils, sugars, or seasonings.
- Limit treats to no more than 1-2 whole peanuts per bird, a few times a week at most.
- Always crush or chop large peanuts to prevent choking hazards.
- Inspect every peanut carefully to ensure there is no mold or discoloration before feeding.
Watch out for
- Moldy or rancid peanuts containing aflatoxins
- Salted, honey-roasted, or flavored varieties
- Whole peanuts that may cause choking
- Raw peanuts in very large quantities
