Can chickens eat orange peel?
If one of your chickens has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
The peel contains essential oils and citric acid that can cause digestive upset if fed in large quantities. Additionally, the tough texture can be difficult for chickens to digest if not chopped into small pieces.
If you do feed it
- Wash the peel thoroughly to remove pesticides and wax
- Chop the peel into very small, bite-sized pieces
- Offer only as an occasional treat, not a daily food
- Remove any moldy or spoiled sections before feeding
Watch out for
- sweetened or candied orange peels
- peels treated with pesticides or wax
- moldy or rotting peel
- large chunks that could cause choking
