Can chickens eat mushrooms?

Why

Many common edible mushrooms are non-toxic to chickens, but wild varieties can be deadly and are often mistaken for safe ones. Even edible mushrooms should only be offered raw or cooked without any seasonings, oils, or garlic.

If you do feed it

• Only offer commercially grown, plain mushrooms with no added salt, butter, or spices.
• Serve in small, chopped pieces to prevent choking and limit intake.
• Introduce slowly to monitor for any digestive upset.
• Never feed any mushroom found growing wild in the yard or forest.

Watch out for

• wild mushrooms of any kind
• mushrooms with added garlic, onions, or butter
• moldy or spoiled mushrooms
• mushroom powders or supplements not formulated for poultry
