Can chickens eat mushrooms?

Why

Many common edible mushrooms are non-toxic to chickens, but wild varieties can be deadly and are often mistaken for safe ones. Even edible mushrooms should only be offered raw or cooked without any seasonings, oils, or garlic, as these additives can harm poultry.

If you do feed it

• Only feed commercially purchased, clearly identified edible mushrooms.
• Serve raw or plain cooked without salt, butter, garlic, or onions.
• Limit treats to a few small pieces occasionally, not as a staple food.
• Always discard any mushroom that looks old, moldy, or unidentified.

Watch out for

• wild mushrooms of any kind
• mushrooms with unknown origin
• mushrooms cooked with garlic, onions, or butter
• moldy or spoiled mushrooms
