Can chickens eat kiwi?
If one of your chickens has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Kiwi is non-toxic and offers vitamins, but the high acidity and sugar can upset a chicken's digestive system if fed too often or in large quantities. It is best treated as an occasional treat rather than a staple of their diet.
If you do feed it
- Remove the fuzzy skin and cut the fruit into small, bite-sized pieces to prevent choking.
- Limit kiwi to no more than one or two small slices per bird, once or twice a week.
- Introduce kiwi slowly to ensure it doesn't cause diarrhea or digestive upset.
- Always serve fresh kiwi without any added sugars or sweeteners.
Watch out for
- sweetened kiwi products or jams
- large quantities of fruit which can cause digestive issues
- moldy or spoiled fruit
