Can chickens eat green beans?

Why

Green beans are non-toxic and provide vitamins and fiber, but raw beans contain lectins that can cause digestive upset if eaten in large quantities. Cooking them softens the beans and neutralizes these compounds, making them much easier for chickens to digest safely.

If you do feed it

• Always cook green beans thoroughly (steamed or boiled) to remove raw toxins and soften the texture.
• Serve only as an occasional treat, limiting them to no more than 10% of the bird's daily diet.
• Chop or cut the beans into smaller, bite-sized pieces to prevent choking hazards.
• Ensure the beans are plain and unsalted, with no added oils, garlic, or onions.
