Can chickens eat grass?

Why

Fresh grass is a natural part of a chicken's foraging behavior and provides fiber and some nutrients. However, grass should not replace their primary feed, which is formulated to meet all their specific nutritional needs.

If you do feed it

• Offer only fresh, clean grass free from pesticides or chemical treatments.
• Limit grass intake to a small portion of their daily diet to ensure they still eat their complete feed.
• Avoid letting them graze on grass that has been recently treated with herbicides or fertilizers.
• Ensure the grass is not moldy or covered in dew that could promote bacterial growth.

Watch out for

• Grass treated with pesticides or herbicides
• Moldy or spoiled grass
• Grass contaminated with dog or cat feces
• Very long, tough grass that might cause crop impaction
