Can chickens eat garlic?

Why

Garlic is generally safe for chickens in very small quantities and may even offer some health benefits like boosting immunity. However, feeding too much garlic can cause anemia and damage red blood cells, so it must be limited to occasional treats rather than a regular part of their diet.

If you do feed it

• Limit garlic to no more than 1-2 cloves per week for a small flock
• Always serve raw or cooked garlic without added salt, oils, or seasonings
• Mix chopped garlic into their regular feed rather than offering it as a standalone treat
• Stop feeding immediately if you notice signs of lethargy or pale combs

Watch out for

• Garlic powder or granules which are highly concentrated and easy to overfeed
• Garlic supplements or pills intended for humans or other animals
• Sweetened garlic products or garlic bread containing harmful ingredients
• Large quantities of raw garlic bulbs which can be difficult to digest
