Can chickens eat celery?

Why

Celery is mostly water and fiber, which can fill them up without providing much nutrition if fed in excess. The stringy texture poses a choking hazard, especially for smaller birds, so it must be chopped finely. It should only be offered as an occasional treat rather than a staple of their diet.

If you do feed it

• Chop celery into very small, bite-sized pieces to prevent choking
• Limit treats to no more than 10% of their total daily food intake
• Wash thoroughly to remove pesticides and dirt before feeding
• Remove tough outer strings if possible to make it easier to eat

Watch out for

• Whole stalks or large chunks that pose a choking risk
• Celery leaves that may be bitter or tough
• Prepared celery with added salt, butter, or seasonings
• Celery that has gone limp or spoiled
