Can chickens eat beetroot?
If one of your chickens has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Beetroot is non-toxic and offers vitamins and antioxidants, though its high sugar content means it should be given sparingly to avoid digestive upset. It is best served raw or cooked without any added salt, spices, or sweeteners.
If you do feed it
- Limit treats to no more than 10% of their daily diet
- Chop or grate the beetroot to prevent choking
- Wash thoroughly to remove soil and pesticides
- Introduce slowly to monitor for individual digestive sensitivity
Watch out for
- Sweetened or pickled beetroot products
- Beet greens with high oxalate content if fed in large quantities
- Moldy or rotting beets
