Can chickens eat bananas?
If one of your chickens has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Bananas are non-toxic and provide potassium and vitamins, but their high sugar content means they should only be offered sparingly to avoid digestive upset. The peel is also edible but tough, so it is best to serve the fruit in small, manageable pieces.
If you do feed it
- Remove the peel or chop it into very small pieces to prevent choking
- Limit treats to no more than 10% of their daily diet
- Serve fresh fruit only, avoiding any moldy or overripe bananas
- Cut the banana into small chunks to make it easier for chickens to eat
Watch out for
- moldy or rotting bananas
- sweetened or processed banana products
- large chunks that could cause choking
