Can chickens eat asparagus?
If one of your chickens has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Asparagus is non-toxic to chickens and provides vitamins and hydration, but the tough stalks can be difficult to digest if served raw or in large quantities. It is best offered in small amounts to prevent digestive upset or choking hazards.
If you do feed it
- Cook the asparagus lightly or chop it into small, bite-sized pieces to aid digestion
- Limit treats to no more than 10% of their daily diet
- Remove any tough, woody ends before serving
- Introduce slowly to monitor for any digestive sensitivity
Watch out for
- raw tough stalks that may cause choking
- seasoned or buttered asparagus
- canned asparagus with added salt
