Can chickens eat ant?
If one of your chickens has already eaten this and you are worried, contact your veterinarian.
Why
Ants are a source of protein and other nutrients that chickens naturally forage for in the wild. However, some ants can bite or sting, and large quantities might cause digestive upset or irritation to the bird's mouth and throat.
If you do feed it
- Offer only a small handful of live or dried ants as an occasional treat, not a daily food.
- Avoid collecting ants from areas treated with pesticides or chemicals.
- Ensure the ants are fresh and not from a nest that is known to be aggressive or stinging heavily.
- Monitor the flock to ensure no bird is being bullied or over-eating the ants.
Watch out for
- ants with strong stingers or bites
- ants collected from pesticide-treated lawns
- ants mixed with sweetened foods or human snacks
- large quantities of ants that could cause crop impaction
