Can cats eat watermelon?

Why

Watermelon is non-toxic to cats and provides hydration, but it contains natural sugars that can upset a cat's stomach if eaten in large quantities. Since cats are obligate carnivores, they do not need fruit in their diet, and the high sugar content offers no nutritional benefit for them.

If you do feed it

• Remove all seeds and the tough green rind before offering any pieces.
• Limit the treat to a few small, bite-sized cubes no more than once or twice a week.
• Ensure the watermelon is fresh and plain, with no added sugar, sweeteners, or seasonings.
• Monitor your cat after the first time to ensure it does not experience vomiting or diarrhea.

Watch out for

• seeds which can cause intestinal blockages
• the rind which is difficult to digest
• sweetened or canned watermelon with added sugars
• watermelon-flavored treats that may contain xylitol
