Can cats eat tomatoes?

Why

The green parts of the tomato plant, including stems, leaves, and unripe fruit, contain solanine which is toxic to cats. Even the ripe fruit can cause stomach upset if a cat eats too much or consumes the seeds and skin.

If you do feed it

• Only offer fully ripe, red tomato flesh in tiny, occasional amounts.
• Remove all stems, leaves, green spots, and seeds before serving.
• Avoid any processed tomato products like sauces, soups, or ketchup due to added salt and spices.
• Monitor your cat closely for vomiting or diarrhea after consumption.
