Can cats eat spinach?

Why

Spinach contains oxalates which can interfere with calcium absorption and potentially contribute to kidney or bladder stones if fed in large quantities over time. While not toxic in the same way as onions or chocolate, the high oxalate content means it requires strict moderation to avoid health issues.

If you do feed it

• Serve only fresh, raw, or lightly steamed spinach with no added salt, butter, garlic, or onions.
• Limit portions to a teaspoon or less for an average adult cat, no more than once or twice a week.
• Always chop the leaves finely to prevent choking and ensure easy digestion.
• Discontinue immediately if you notice any changes in your cat's urination or appetite.

Watch out for

• Spinach that is cooked with garlic, onions, or excessive salt
• Spinach soup or smoothies containing other toxic ingredients
• Large quantities fed daily which increases oxalate buildup risk
• Frozen spinach that has not been thawed or cooked properly
