Can cats eat seaweed?

Why

Seaweed itself is not toxic, but it is high in iodine which can upset a cat's thyroid if eaten too often. Most commercial seaweed snacks are seasoned with salt, garlic, or onion powder, which are dangerous for cats.

If you do feed it

• Only offer plain, unsalted, and unsweetened seaweed with no added seasonings.
• Limit to a very small piece (less than a teaspoon) as an occasional treat, not a daily food.
• Ensure the seaweed is fully dried and free of any sharp, crunchy pieces that could cause choking.
• Never feed seaweed if your cat has a known thyroid condition without consulting a vet.

Watch out for

• Sweetened or flavored seaweed snacks
• Seaweed mixed with garlic, onion, or excessive salt
• Raw or wet seaweed that may harbor bacteria
• Seaweed with added spices or sauces
