Can cats eat potatoes?

Why

Raw potatoes contain solanine, a toxin that can make cats very sick, so they must never be fed raw or green. Even when cooked, potatoes offer little nutritional value for cats and can cause stomach upset if given in large quantities.

If you do feed it

• Only feed fully cooked, peeled, and unseasoned potatoes with no butter, salt, or oils.
• Limit treats to a teaspoon or two of mashed or diced potato, no more than once or twice a week.
• Ensure the potato is not green or sprouted, as these parts remain toxic even after cooking.

Watch out for

• raw or green potatoes
• potato skins
• fried potatoes (chips, fries)
• seasonings like garlic, onion, or salt
• mashed potatoes with butter or milk
