Can cats eat pineapple?

Why

Pineapple is non-toxic to cats, but its high sugar content and acidity can cause digestive upset like vomiting or diarrhea. Since cats are obligate carnivores, they do not need fruit in their diet, and too much can lead to weight gain or blood sugar spikes.

If you do feed it

• Remove the tough outer skin and the hard core before offering any piece.
• Offer only a very small bite-sized piece (less than a teaspoon) as a rare treat.
• Ensure the pineapple is fresh and unsweetened, with no added syrups or juices.
• Monitor your cat closely after feeding to check for any signs of stomach upset.

Watch out for

• The tough, spiky outer skin which is a choking hazard
• The hard central core that can cause intestinal blockage
• Canned pineapple or fruit cups containing added sugar or syrups
• Dried pineapple which is often sweetened and has concentrated sugar
