Can cats eat honey?

Why

Cats are obligate carnivores and do not need sugar in their diet, so honey provides empty calories that can lead to obesity. The high sugar content can also disrupt their digestive system, causing diarrhea or vomiting, and poses a risk of botulism spores in very young kittens or immunocompromised cats.

If you do feed it

• Offer only a tiny amount (less than a quarter teaspoon) as an occasional treat, not a daily habit.
• Ensure the honey is raw or pasteurized and free from any added flavors, xylitol, or fruit pieces.
• Only give this to healthy adult cats, avoiding kittens, seniors, or cats with diabetes or weight issues.
• Monitor your cat closely after feeding for any signs of digestive distress or lethargy.

Watch out for

• Xylitol or artificial sweeteners (highly toxic)
• Honeycomb with sharp wax or propolis that could irritate the throat
• Infused honeys with garlic, onion, or fruit pits
• Raw honey for very young kittens or cats with weak immune systems
