Can cats eat ham?

Why

Ham is very high in sodium and fat, which can cause stomach upset, dehydration, or pancreatitis if a cat eats too much. It also lacks the essential nutrients cats need and often contains preservatives that are unnecessary for their diet.

If you do feed it

• Offer only a tiny piece (smaller than a pea) as an occasional treat, not a meal.
• Ensure the ham is fully cooked, unseasoned, and free of garlic, onion, or excessive spices.
• Never feed ham that is cured, smoked, or contains added sugars or sweeteners.
• Always provide fresh water immediately after to help flush out excess salt.

Watch out for

• Garlic or onion powder in seasoned hams
• Sweetened or glazed ham varieties
• Cured or smoked hams with high nitrate levels
• Ham bones or rinds that pose choking hazards
