Can cats eat fruit?

Why

Cats are obligate carnivores and do not need fruit, but small bites of certain fruits are not toxic. The main risks come from seeds, pits, and skins which can cause choking or contain trace toxins, along with the high sugar content that can upset their stomachs.

If you do feed it

• Always remove all seeds, pits, and cores before serving.
• Offer only a small piece (about the size of a pea) as an occasional treat.
• Peel the fruit to remove the skin, which can be hard to digest.
• Introduce slowly and watch for vomiting or diarrhea.

Watch out for

• seeds and pits (apple cores, cherry pits, peach stones)
• skins and peels
• sweetened or dried fruit versions
• grapes and raisins (which are toxic)
