Can cats eat coconut?

Why

Coconut meat contains high levels of fat which can lead to stomach upset, vomiting, or pancreatitis in cats. While the flesh itself is not poisonous, the rich oils and fibers are difficult for felines to digest in large quantities.

If you do feed it

• Offer only a tiny piece of fresh, unsweetened coconut meat as an occasional treat.
• Ensure the coconut is plain with no added sugars, salts, or flavorings.
• Remove all hard shell pieces to prevent choking or dental damage.
• Discontinue immediately if your cat shows signs of digestive upset.

Watch out for

• Sweetened coconut products like macaroons or desserts
• Coconut oil in large quantities
• Hard coconut shells or husks
• Coconut milk with added sugars or xylitol
