Can cats eat carrots?

Why

Carrots are non-toxic to cats, but their high fiber content can cause digestive upset if eaten in large quantities. Since cats are obligate carnivores, they derive little nutritional benefit from vegetables and may not enjoy the taste or texture.

If you do feed it

• Always serve carrots fully cooked and soft to prevent choking, as raw carrots are too hard for cats to chew properly.
• Limit portions to a teaspoon or less of chopped or grated carrot as an occasional treat, not a meal replacement.
• Introduce carrots slowly to monitor for any signs of stomach upset or diarrhea.
• Avoid adding salt, butter, garlic, onions, or other seasonings that are harmful to cats.

Watch out for

• Raw carrots which pose a choking hazard
• Sweetened or seasoned carrot products
• Carrot tops or greens which may cause stomach issues
• Large chunks that could block the throat
