Can cats eat broccoli?

Why

Cats are obligate carnivores and do not need vegetables, but small pieces of plain broccoli are generally harmless. However, too much can cause stomach upset, gas, or digestive issues due to the fiber and sugars.

If you do feed it

• Serve only raw or steamed without any salt, butter, garlic, onions, or seasonings.
• Limit to a few tiny florets as an occasional treat, not a meal replacement.

• Introduce slowly to monitor for any signs of vomiting or diarrhea.

Watch out for

• seasoned or cooked broccoli with garlic, onions, or butter
• broccoli stems that are too tough and hard to chew
• canned broccoli with added salt
• broccoli rabe or other bitter varieties
