Can cats eat broccoli?

Why

Cats are obligate carnivores and do not need vegetables, so broccoli offers little nutritional benefit for them. Large quantities or raw pieces can cause gas, bloating, or digestive irritation, and the tough stalks pose a choking hazard.

If you do feed it

• Offer only tiny, bite-sized pieces of cooked broccoli with no salt, oil, or seasonings.
• Limit treats to no more than one or two small florets occasionally.
• Always monitor your cat after feeding to ensure they tolerate it without vomiting or diarrhea.
• Avoid the tough stalks which are difficult to chew and digest.

Watch out for

• Raw broccoli which is harder to digest
• Seasoned, buttered, or garlic-infused broccoli which can be toxic
• Large chunks that may cause choking
• Canned broccoli which often contains high sodium
