Can cats eat bread?

Why

Cats are obligate carnivores and cannot derive nutrition from bread, which is mostly empty carbohydrates. While a small piece of plain, cooked bread is unlikely to cause harm, it can lead to digestive upset or contribute to unhealthy weight gain if fed too often.

If you do feed it

• Offer only a tiny crumb or a piece no larger than a fingernail
• Ensure the bread is fully cooked and completely plain with no added salt, sugar, or butter
• Do not feed bread if your cat has a sensitive stomach or weight issues
• Never make bread a regular part of your cat's diet

Watch out for

• Bread containing raisins, onions, garlic, or chocolate which are toxic
• Raw dough which can expand in the stomach and produce alcohol
• Sweetened or flavored varieties like cinnamon or garlic bread
• Bread with seeds or nuts that could cause choking or blockages
