Can cats eat bananas?

Why

Bananas are non-toxic to cats, but they offer no nutritional benefit for obligate carnivores and are high in sugar which can lead to weight gain or digestive upset. Because cats have small stomachs and sensitive digestive systems, even a small amount can cause an upset tummy if given too frequently.

If you do feed it

• Offer only a tiny slice (about the size of a fingernail) as an occasional treat, not a daily snack.
• Always peel the banana completely and remove any stringy fibers before serving.
• Serve the banana fresh and plain, never cooked, sweetened, or mixed with other ingredients.
• Monitor your cat closely after the first taste for any signs of vomiting or diarrhea.

Watch out for

• Banana peels which are difficult to digest and can cause blockages
• Sweetened or processed banana products like banana bread or chips
• Large quantities which increase the risk of sugar-related issues
